Program Description:

After serving our country, U.S. military veterans often face significant financial issues related to multiple deployments, spousal income disruption, and multiple moves. The WHF Foundation is proud to present  “Financial Issues Facing U.S. Military Veterans," featuring the latest research and resources related to these critical issues.

Speaker Bios:

Mechel Glass assumed her duties as Financial Education Program Analyst for the Office of Servicemember Affairs (OSA) on August 24th, 2014. In her role, Ms. Glass brings a wealth of knowledge based upon her years of service in the nonprofit community helping veterans and their family members resolve financial issues. Mechel began teaching financial literacy after inventing an educational finance board game and card game under her own company which she sold to a Consumer Credit Counseling Service firm in 2007.

Prior to joining CFPB, Mechel was Vice President of Education for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions for seven years. She managed a team of community development officers across 15 states. She is a certified project management professional (PMP) and worked for IBM as an International IT Project Manager for over 10 years. She is an Army Veteran and served over sixteen months in foreign service during the Persian Gulf War.

She received her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in International Relations and received her bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University in International Affairs. In addition to her PMP, Mechel has also received her level-three Federal Acquisition Certification for Project and Program Managers (FAC/PPM).


Gary R. Mottola is the Research Director for the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and a social psychologist with over 20 years of research experience, much of which was spent in the financial services industry.  In his role at the FINRA Foundation, he oversees and conducts research projects aimed at better understanding financial capability in America, protecting investors from financial fraud, and improving financial disclosure statements.  Dr. Mottola received his B.A. from the University at Albany, his M.A. from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. from the University of Delaware.  He was a visiting scholar at Wharton in 2006 and is an adjunct professor of statistics in Villanova University’s Economics Department.
